No acronym, no Cajun spelling, nothing to decode. This is the chant the way it sounds from the student section, every letter in the address bar. Oxford got to yell it with feeling on Sept. 19, 2026: No. 8 Ole Miss 32, No. 7 LSU 24, in Lane Kiffin's first game back as LSU's coach.[1][2][3]

The legend of the flyers (1959)

Here's the story everybody tells, and the sources that tell it call it legend, so treat it that way.

✈️
The flyers

Before the 1959 game, LSU coach Paul Dietzel supposedly hired a plane to drop "Go to Hell, LSU!" flyers on LSU's own campus, to fire up his players.[4]

↩️
The reply

Ole Miss coach Johnny Vaught is said to have answered with "Go to Hell, Ole Miss!" flyers in Oxford. By kickoff, a split Tiger Stadium was yelling it both ways.[4]

πŸŽƒ
The game

That was the Halloween night Billy Cannon returned a punt 89 yards for No. 1 LSU against No. 3 Ole Miss, one of the most famous plays in the rivalry.[8]

A French rivalry history puts it well: whatever the exact version, the chant has been in the stands ever since.[9] Ole Miss's official rallying cry is a different one, of course: "Hotty Toddy," first printed as "Heighty! Tighty!" in 1926.[10]

The series behind the scream

1894
First meeting

Ole Miss won 26–6 in Baton Rouge on Dec. 3, 1894.[11]

64–44–4
All-time, LSU leads

With vacated games removed. School records counted 66–44–4 before 2026; both numbers are in circulation.[11][8]

2008
Magnolia Bowl born

Students named the game for the flower both states share. Ole Miss won the first trophy, 31–13.[11]

55–49
Highest-scoring game

Ole Miss over LSU in Oxford, Sept. 30, 2023, under Kiffin.[11]

Then the coach switched sides

  1. Kiffin goes 55–19 at Ole Miss and becomes the first Rebel coach since Billy Brewer to beat LSU three times.[5]
  2. He confirms he's leaving for LSU. Seven years, $91M.[12][13]
  3. He tells reporters there'll be "so much attention, hatred, everything on me."[11]
  4. Ole Miss leads 24–7 at the half, LSU ties it, and Trinidad Chambliss runs in the winner from 14 yards out. Final: 32–24.[1][11]
  5. LSU loses 35–34 in overtime at Kentucky and slides to 4–2, 1–2 SEC, and No. 22 in the AP poll.[14][15]

Our take (opinion): no chant ever had a better week of free marketing. Fair is fair: LSU's four wins include a 51–10 rout of Clemson, and the season isn't half over.[16]
