Fire LaneKiffin?FIREKIFFIN.COM
LSU paid $13 million a year for the coach, about $27.6 million for the whole on-field staff, and an estimated $40 million-plus for the roster.[3][8][11] Six games in: 4–2, 1–2 in the SEC, a one-point overtime loss at Kentucky, and a slide from No. 10 to No. 22 in the AP poll.[17][22] In our opinion, that's not what a national-title price tag buys. Yet.

The Hot-Seat Meter
Reading: SIMMERING (6/10)
Our opinion, not a forecast. A 4–2 start with two road SEC losses after this much spending lights the burner. A five-game home slate with Alabama and Texas still to come decides whether it boils.[21]
By the numbers: dollars vs. wins
Every number here comes from the linked reporting. Money on the left, football on the right. You do the math. (We did some too, further down.)
$400K base plus $12.6M supplemental, through Dec. 31, 2032: $91M before incentives. No. 2 in the sport behind Kirby Smart, per The Advocate.[3][4]
Kiffin's $13M plus $14.6M for assistants through January 2027, including DC Blake Baker ($3M) and OC Charlie Weis Jr. ($2.5M).[8]
CBS Sports' industry poll called it college football's most expensive roster, with some sources projecting over $50M. The Athletic: "well over $40 million." These are estimates; LSU hasn't published a payroll.[11][12]
LSU paid Kiffin's buyout to leave Ole Miss and agreed to honor his Rebels playoff bonuses too.[3][5]
At No. 8 Ole Miss 32–24 (Sept. 19) and at Kentucky 35–34 in OT (Oct. 10).[19][17]
Expectations vs. reality
LSU doesn't grade on a curve. CBS Sports put it plainly: a proud program with national-championship expectations whose three coaches before Kelly each won one.[16]
🏆 The standard
- National-title expectations. Brian Kelly went 34–14, never won more than nine regular-season games, and was fired in Year 4, per CBS Sports.[16][14]
- A roster built "to compete for the College Football Playoff in Year 1": the No. 1 transfer class, 42 transfers and the first three-five-star portal haul 247Sports has tracked.[11][13]
- "He'll be expected to have LSU in the national championship mix immediately." (CBS Sports)[10]
- A head-coach salary within a hair of Georgia's Kirby Smart, who has won national titles.[3][5]

Kentucky won when Kenny Minchey ran in a 2-point conversion after LSU scored first in overtime. LSU had a chance to put it away late: Kentucky missed field goals from 42 and 26 yards, then hit a 33-yarder with 12 seconds left to force OT.[17][18] At Ole Miss, the Rebels led 24–7 at halftime and LSU rallied to tie it before Ole Miss scored the winning touchdown.[20]
The tenure, so far
- LSU fires Brian Kelly in Year 4 of a 10-year, ~$100M deal after a 49–25 home loss to Texas A&M. Frank Wilson becomes interim coach.[14][15]
- LSU confirms Kelly was fired without cause and owes him about $54M, with a clause that offsets it by any new salary.[15][24]
- Kiffin signs the LSU term sheet the day after Ole Miss's Egg Bowl, having weighed LSU, Florida and Ole Miss.[3][24]
- Kiffin confirms he's leaving Ole Miss for LSU. The deal is effective that day: 7 years, $91M, about $4M a year more than he made in Oxford.[4][6]
- LSU announces 11 staff additions. Eight of them followed Kiffin from Ole Miss.[9]
- LSU, under interim coach Frank Wilson, loses the Texas Bowl to Houston 38–35 and finishes 2025 at 7–6.[23][25]
- The portal sprint: 42 transfers, the No. 1 transfer class, and three five-stars (QB Sam Leavitt, OT Jordan Seaton, DE Princewill Umanmielen).[13][10]
- Opener: LSU 51, Clemson 10. Optimism in Baton Rouge.[21]
- Back to Oxford: No. 8 Ole Miss 32, No. 7 LSU 24.[19][20]
- Kentucky 35, No. 10 LSU 34 (OT). LSU falls to 4–2.[17]
Napkin math (our opinion, your outrage)
Simple division using the sourced figures above. These aren't official numbers. They're what LSU fans do at the tailgate.
| Staff salaries ($27.6M) ÷ 4 wins Assumes the season ends today. | ≈ $6.9M / win[8] |
| Estimated roster ($40M+) ÷ 4 wins Using the low end of the reported estimate. | ≈ $10M+ / win[11] |
| Kiffin's $13M ÷ 12 regular-season games | ≈ $1.08M / game[3] |
| Fired without cause after the 2026 season: 80% of 6 remaining years at $13M Our estimate. It assumes a flat $13M a year and leaves out incentives. Paid monthly through 2032 with no offset if he takes another job.[3][7] | ≈ $62.4M[3] |
| Still owed to Kelly, the coach LSU already fired Reduced by any new salary he earns. | ≈ $54M[15] |
Fair is fair: four of the six results are blowout wins, including 51–10 over Clemson and 35–6 over a ranked Texas A&M. LSU is still ranked, it's only Year 1, and the losses came by 8 and 1. A fan site can be loud and still be honest. Our take: this money was supposed to buy a title contender, not a team that gets stunned on the road. That's opinion, not fact.[21][22]

FAQs
Is Lane Kiffin really LSU's head coach?
Yes. He signed a term sheet on Nov. 29, 2025, and confirmed the move on Nov. 30, 2025, leaving Ole Miss. The contract runs from Nov. 30, 2025, through Dec. 31, 2032.[4][6]
How much is his LSU contract worth?
Seven years and $91 million before incentives: $13 million a year ($400,000 base plus $12.6 million supplemental). That made him the second-highest-paid coach in college football, behind Georgia's Kirby Smart.[3][4]
What would it cost LSU to fire him?
If LSU fires him without cause, it owes 80% of his remaining salary, paid monthly through 2032, with no offset if he takes another job. Our rough estimate after the 2026 season is about $62.4 million, assuming a flat $13 million a year.[3][7]
What's LSU's record under Kiffin?
4–2 overall and 1–2 in the SEC through Oct. 10, 2026. The wins: Clemson, Louisiana Tech, Texas A&M and McNeese. The losses: at Ole Miss 32–24 and at Kentucky 35–34 in overtime. The 2025 Texas Bowl loss to Houston came under interim coach Frank Wilson, not Kiffin.[17][21][25]
Is Kiffin actually on the hot seat?
That's our opinion, and we've kept it labeled as one. It's Year 1, LSU is still ranked No. 22, and the losses were by 8 and 1. The point here is the price: a reported $40M+ roster plus a $27.6M staff were sold as an immediate playoff contender.[22][11][8]
Is this site affiliated with LSU or Lane Kiffin?
No. FireKiffin.com is a fan opinion site and a domain for sale. It is not affiliated with LSU, the SEC, or Lane Kiffin, and it uses no school logos or marks.
Who buys FIREKIFFIN.COM?
Fan media, podcasts and sports talk, merch DTC, sports satire, and message-board brands. SI/FanNation frames college football NIL as surging toward ~$2B, and that money pulls attention with it.[1]
